About Clos des Papes, Production & Critical Reputation
Clos des Papes is one of the historic benchmark estates of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The Avril family has been associated with the property for generations, with Paul-Vincent Avril continuing the family's traditional approach today. The estate's vineyards are divided among numerous parcels throughout the appellation, bringing together different soils, exposures, and grape varieties in the final blend.
Grenache forms the foundation of the rouge, supported principally by Mourvèdre and Syrah along with smaller amounts of other permitted varieties. The wines are traditionally matured in large old oak foudres rather than new barriques, preserving the purity of the fruit and the distinctive herbal, spicy, and mineral character of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
