Tasting Notes

The 2024 Le Bastard is a delicate and expressive Trousseau, offering aromas of wild cherry, redcurrant, raspberry, and dried rose petals alongside notes of white pepper, forest floor, and subtle earthy spice. The palate is light to medium-bodied, with vibrant acidity, fine tannins, and an elegant, almost weightless texture. Bright red fruit and floral notes are complemented by savoury complexity, leading to a fresh, mineral-driven finish.

About the Winery, Production & Critical Reputation

Domaine Fumey-Chatelain is a family-owned estate in the Jura region of eastern France, founded by Raphaël Fumey and Adeline Chatelain. Their son Marin has joined the family domaine, bringing a new generation's perspective while maintaining the estate's commitment to expressing the distinctive grape varieties and terroirs of the Jura.

Le Bastard is produced from Trousseau à la Dame, a particularly prized selection of the indigenous Trousseau grape. The fruit comes from the Les Loges and Aux Barbis vineyard parcels near Montigny-lès-Arsures, an area renowned for producing some of the Jura's finest examples of Trousseau.

The vineyards feature clay-and-marl soils that contribute structure, freshness, and savoury complexity to the wine. Trousseau is naturally delicate in colour but capable of producing wines with remarkable aromatic intensity, combining bright red fruit, floral perfume, subtle spice, and earthy minerality.

With only 48 bottles imported into British Columbia, the 2024 Le Bastard represents a particularly limited opportunity to explore one of the Jura's distinctive indigenous varieties from a highly regarded family producer.
